The Pros and Cons of Pavers
Pavers are a bit more controversial than you may think - some see them as a clean, refined way of finishing off your dream backyard, while others see them as out of touch with the ordinary. When considering a backyard remodel, it’s important to know the pros and the cons of paver patios.
The Pros:
Durable!
When installed properly, the stone “tiles” fit perfectly together to create a solid and smooth surface. Due to the interlocking design of pavers, they can withstand the test of time much longer than most alternatives. They’re even known to outlive concrete foundations!
2. They’re perfect for the NJ climate.
New Jersey’s polar Summer and Winter climates can cause some issues for concrete patios - when the ground freezes in winter, it can cause cracks in the weak spots of concrete. Pavers, however, will remain unaffected by hot and humid summers, as well as cold and rigid winters!
3. Low maintenance.
Upkeep is easy-peasy, lemon squeezy! When autumn leaves fall, you can simply sweep them off the pavers. Stains can usually be lifted with some lukewarm water and soap - and if damages somehow occur, it’s fairly easy to replace single tiles. With concrete patios, you would be faced with replacing an entire concrete slab.
The Cons:
Installation time.
If you’re in a time crunch, maybe concrete is the better option for you. Concrete patios just need to be dug, poured, and cured - a process that takes less than a week. Paver patios, on the other hand, take upwards of a week to lay.
2. Can be more expensive than alternative options.
The initial installation of paver patios are - on average - more expensive than concrete patios/other alternatives. However, it is worth mentioning that you may save money overtime due to the low maintenance costs.
3. Can grow weeds over time.
Because paver patios are built of many small tiles, small weeds and grass can grow through them. Luckily, these weeds are pretty easy to remove - just pull them up!
