A Hidden Home Theater
Recently, we posted a reel that blew up — in it, we show off one of our most recent projects, a movie theater hidden behind a false bookshelf in a brand new basement. Once the door is pulled back, a large movie theater is revealed with a projector screen and a series of seating levels covered in brown-leather recliners. It is, simply put, a hidden paradise.
Tiktok created an immense popularity for modern-day secret doors and entrances when a sound, a clip from the song “Secret Tunnel” featured on the cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender, began circulating. Individuals across the world used the sound to share videos of their own residential hidden rooms, and it became a hit!
(Edit from 12/30/22: This trend is so popular that, just a month after publishing this article, Architectural Digest Pro released their own article explaining the obsession over secret rooms, linked here!)
So, here’s some even cooler news: it’s not that difficult to build secret rooms, especially when finishing a basement! Because the entirety of the basement level is below ground, it isn’t easily deduced that a secret room exists from the outside, so all that is needed to conceal the space is a discreet entryway.
For this project, it was clear that a book shelf would be the easiest to install and use — it opens just like a door on a latch and looks like a built in (points for style).
